Weekly Calls to Action (July 10th – July 14th)

1. DEMAND TAYLOR COUNTY COMMISSIONER WILLIAM BRAD BIRCHUM’S REMOVAL FROM OFFICE

Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [ZIP]. I’m calling to urge the District Attorney/Assistant District Attorney to file a petition with the district court to remove William Brad Birchum from his position of County Commissioner. According to Texas Local Government Code Section 87.001-87.032 a County Commissioner can be removed from office due to incompetence and/or official misconduct. Commissioner Birchum has plead guilty to an act of public lewdness that was the direct result of sexual harassment, he does not represent the values of Taylor county. Thank you for your time.

District Attorney James Hicks: 325-674-1261

Assistant District Attorney: 325-674-1377

2. PROTECT PUBLIC SCHOOL FUNDING AND STUDENT LOAN PROTECTIONS

Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [CITY, ZIP].
I’m calling to urge [REP/SENT NAME] to reject the Trump administration’s proposed budget cuts to the education department.
OPTIONAL: Share a personal story or reason why this matters to you. For example:
— I (or someone close to you) am a product of the public school system, and I think more effort should be spent on improving it, not abandoning it.
— I (or someone close to you) needed federal assistance to pay for higher education, and I support the programs that make it easier for students to do so and protect them from abuse by lending companies.
— It is important to me that my children (or young people close to you) have access to arts (or science, foreign language, etc.) education in their schools, and do not want to see those programs dismantled.
Thank you for your time and attention.

3. PROTECT OVERTIME AND THE 40-HOUR WORK WEEK

Hello, my name is [NAME] and I’m calling from [CITY, ZIP].
I’m calling to strongly oppose S 801, the Working Families Flexibility Act. We don’t need to make it easier for employers to create unpredictable work schedules or ask us to work more than 40 hours a week without extra pay; we need real supports like paid family leave, guaranteed sick days and fair schedules.
Thank you so much for your hard work answering the phones.

4. KEEP RELIGIOUS ORGANIZATIONS OUT OF POLITICS

Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m a constituent from [CITY].
[IF COMMITTEE, ADD]: I’d like to pass along a message for the Chairman and committee members.
I’m calling to express my opposition to the provision in the Financial Services appropriations bill that allows churches to endorse or fund political candidates tax-free. It is vital that we maintain the separation of Church and State, and I ask that the 2018 spending bill sufficiently fund the IRS to allow them to enforce this law.
Thank you for your time and attention.

5. THE ACLU LEGAL TEAM FILED A LAWSUIT DEMANDING TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY FROM TRUMP’S ELECTION INTEGRITY COMMISSION.

This commission is a sham. Donald Trump lost the popular vote, and this commission was established to sell the lie that he didn’t. The end game is to justify laws that will make voting harder for people, most likely minority and lower-income people. And the commission wants to do this all behind closed doors. That’s not only bad for our democracy, it’s against the law.

Sign our petition now to demand the transparency and accountability this commission owes the public. Make it clear we won’t let them hide behind closed doors while they try to restrict our voting rights.
